Abstract. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, as the number of wild reindeer on Novaya Zemlya began to decline, reindeer were imported from Kolguyev Island, and an experimental reindeer herd was established. However, the development of domestic reindeer herding required an assessment of the availability and quality of forage areas, not only during the summer but also during the winter. To address these issues, a geobotanical team was part of the Novaya Zemlya Scientific and Commercial Expedition. In 1932–1933, it was headed by a young employee of the Arctic Institute, Vera Danilovna Aleksandrovna. The reports on the geobotanical survey of the Gusinaya Zemlya Peninsula, the island of Mezhdusharsky, and the Kara side of the Southern Island of the archipelago, which have been preserved in the Scientific Archive of the Komi Science Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, provide insight into the objectives of the expedition, its composition, the routes traveled, and the results of the work. These reports also reveal the process of the expeditionary practice of scientists who participated in the exploration of Novaya Zemlya in the early 1930s.
