Abstract. This article summarizes three interviews with former reindeer herders at the Selkup state farms of Polyarny and Tolkinsky. It explores the reindeer husbandry methods used during the late Soviet era, in the 1970s and 1980s, to graze herds of 1,600–2,000 animals each on these state farms. A dissonance is noted, suggesting a distinct phenomenon of Selkup state farm reindeer herding: the large reindeer herds of the Polyarny and Tolkinsky state farms were kept in forest-tundra and taiga climate zones uncharacteristic of their size. The Selkups lacked traditional skills for managing large numbers of reindeer. Traditional Selkup reindeer herding was small-scale and belonged to the taiga reindeer herding system. The study compares the reindeer care method described by herders in the 1980s and 1990s with the reindeer herding method developed by Soviet scientists during the first socialist reforms — described in archival sources — and concludes that these methods are identical, sharing a common set of organizational principles borrowed from taiga and tundra reindeer herding systems and supplemented with a number of Soviet innovations. The study concludes that the Selkup industry of large-scale state-farm reindeer herding owes its existence to a new reindeer management method developed in the early years of Soviet rule. The scientific precision and effectiveness of this method not only helped the industry establish itself but also ensured its successful development over several decades
