The article examines the historical and modern reindeer husbandry role in the indigenous peoples life of the region, based on statistical Federal State Statistics Service data of the Russian Federation, as well as on materials provided on the websites municipal districts themselves. The article pays special attention to the Northern Territories, namely the Taimyr Dolgan-Nenets, Evenki and Turukhansk municipal districts of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Both the potential and the development problems of reindeer husbandry as the region economic basis are considered. The uneven reindeer husbandry development in the districts and their causes are substantiated. In the studied areas, where reindeer husbandry is closely intertwined with cultural and economic life, there is a decrease in the deer number, which threatens the indigenous peoples well-being of the North of Siberia. Despite economic challenges, reindeer husbandry continues to play an important role in preserving cultural identity.
