Review of Artificial Intelligence: A Contemporary Approach by Stuart J. Russell and Peter Norvig (4th Edition, 2021)

Abstract. A review of the most famous and popular English-language textbook in the field of artificial intelligence is presented. The scientific biographies of the authors of the book under review — Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig «Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach» are considered. The modern structure of this publication is presented, the definitions of artificial intelligence are highlighted, the dynamics of the formation of this definition is emphasized. Potential significance of the translation of this textbook into Russian is indicated. Stuart Russell and Peter Norvig write that the goal of artificial intelligence was previously defined by them as creating systems that try to maximize expected utility, where specific information about the utility — the goal — is provided by the system designers by humans. In the same edition, the authors no longer assume that the target is fixed and known to the artificial intelligence system; instead, the system may not know the true goals of the people on whose behalf it is acting. She must learn what to maximize and must act appropriately, even if she is unsure of the goal.
It seems that the content of the book is of particular importance, related to the specific developments in the field of artificial intelligence, presented in it. The reviewer was interested in optimistic predictions about the future development of artificial intelligence and about the future of machine learning, the most well-known technology that is identified with modern artificial intelligence systems.
