Abstract. This study is devoted to the analysis of the discourse on the death of a saint in religious texts of the era of the Horde Yoke. The main goal of the study is to identify stable discursive practices associated with people’s perception of the death of saints in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The study focuses on four hagiographies of hierarchs and venerable saints from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries: Sergius of Radonezh, Metropolitan Peter, Stephen of Perm, and the hagiography of Sergius of Radonezh written by Epiphanius the Wise. The study employs archaeological analysis developed by Michel Foucault, which emphasizes the unevenness of epistemological development. The study uses a sample of four texts, the analysis of which reveals common discursive practices inherent in the thinking of a particular period, despite differences in authorship and the social roles of the characters. The results show that the hagiographies maintain a synthesis of the ontological aspects of death, often represented through biological imagery, with political and social aspects: both the actual death and the posthumous existence of the saint are linked to religious, social, and power relations in Russian society at that time. An important feature of the discourse on the death of a saint, identified during the analysis, is the combination of characteristic features of Christian ontological ideas with the current social situation in the public consciousness. This confirms the hypothesis about the specific way of thinking of people in the fourteenth century, in which the categories of death, power relations, and the sacred foundation of the world are combined in narratives about the death of a saint. The novelty of the study lies in the use of an archaeological approach to analyze religious texts from the period of the Tatar-Mongol Yoke and to examine the process of centralization of the Russian state and the acquisition of independence through the lens of the identified discursive practices.
