Abstract. The history of aesthetic and philosophical theories of the early 20th century presents not only a fundamental but also an applied problem, driven by the need to understand the logic behind the adaptation of concepts related to technological development to address the problems of classical aesthetics. Of particular interest in this regard is the use of the concept of “industry” to describe the new functions and objectives of art, a concept traceable in a number of theoretical constructs in the Russian avant-garde and the Bauhaus. By examining these works, it becomes possible to discern two fundamental vectors of attitudes toward technological development that determine the logic of the approach to the functions of art. In the Russian avant-garde, industry is perceived as an art form to which the artist must adapt, for example, by turning to non-objective art or to art-as-process (which implies the creation not of a nished work, but of the conditions for its production). In Bauhaus theory, however, the transformation of factory production itself becomes necessary, incorporating elements of individual artisan labor, thereby making it possible to reintroduce the aesthetic component to mass industrial activity.
