IN SEARCH OF DIFFERENT MODERNITY: MARXIST DISCOURSE IN WORKS OF D. CHAKRABARTI

Abstract. The development of critical theory in the 20th century allowed us to address the question of forms of modernity distinct from the European logic of historical development. This issue is explored in considerable detail in Marxist theory and postcolonial studies, which, despite some similarities, remain distinct forms of critical discourse. By examining D. Chakrabarty’s theoretical legacy, it becomes possible to identify not only the points of contact between these theories but also to understand some ways of defining other versions of modernity. The analysis reveals three versions of modernity found in D. Chakrabarty’s work. First, the researcher addresses a negative form of modernity associated with historicism and the absorption of local historical narratives into a Eurocentric version of history. Second, a positive social modernity associated with the plurality of history and the possibility of discovering alternative versions of progressive development in the techno-economic history of social groups. Thirdly, we can speak of a non- human modernity, associated with the establishment of an equal relationship between humans and nature, resulting in the emergence of “planet” as a significant category in the social sciences and humanities. It is this latter version of modernity that can be considered the most significant in the contemporary era.
