«Supergods»: how creators of comic books comprehend superhero archetypes

Abstract. In the 1930s, superhero – a character endowed with extraordinary, fantastic abilities, committing socially significant actions for the common good of mankind – was first introduced to viewer-reader. After 1938 and the first appearance of Superman, the concept of a superhero has become the most famous genre trend in comics and graphic novels, it reaches the whole world through American publications, goes into the formats of cinema, animation and video games, returns lost ground after each fall. But what makes superheroes so popular? A British writer, screenwriter and comic creator Grant Morrison in his book “Supergods: What Masked Vigilantes, Miraculous Mutants, and a Sun God from Smallville Can Teach Us About Being Human”, first published in English in 2011 and first translated into Russian in 2020, comprehends and analyzes the history of comics and his own biography in an attempt to explore the modern myth of the superhero. This article is a detailed review of the theoretical work of Grant Morrison, aimed not only at the description, but also at understanding the information contained in this work. As a result, it is concluded that the book “Supergods” is a work of both superheroes and people, because through the creation and perception of superhero stories, people comprehend themselves, their own history and the world around them.
