Memoirs of the Siberian merchants Ya. D. Frizer and S. V. Vostrotin as a mirror of regional science

Abstract. Siberian society that makes a way to its arrangement on the threshold of the 19th-20th centuries was different from the Russian one due to political and economic characteristics of its formation. Place and role of Siberia in the Russian history often suffered from the lack of consistency and certainty, strengthening in the mind of an ordinary Russian dweller a negative stereotype on Siberia as a land of eternal cold, hard labor and exile. The perception of Siberia by Russia and the formation of regional Siberian consciousness represented two independent parallels that could hardly met together. Siberian society for three hundred years of its existence as a part of the Russian Empire developed its own regional elite, cultural and social values. On the one hand, Siberians were proud of their small motherland, but from the other hand felt bitterness because of uncertainty in relationship with European Russia. Siberian intelligentsia felt in its attempts to change the Russia’s attitude towards Siberia as its golden bottom, source of unlimited natural resources that always appeared at first demand from nowhere, land of dark and illiterate peoples, poor by cultural and human matter. Till now researchers used sources of regional character and Russian ones which makes the duality in Siberia’s perception stronger and visible, fastens already existed stereotypes. It makes reasonable to search and use materials that put together both regional and global approaches on micro-level, such as preserved personal archives, diaries and correspondence that provide a different view on Siberian reality. In the present article the researchers use the unpublished memoirs of two prominent Siberian merchants and social activists Ya. D. Frizer and S. V. Vostrotin as a source on the role and influence of political exiles on Siberian society, novel view on economic potential and facilities of Siberia from the regional point of view, complicated interrelations between the central power and Siberian society, possibilities and ways of self-realization for merchants from the distant Siberian periphery in imperial Russia. Unluckily, such sources are not numerous, and one can suppose that many of them are still waiting for opening in the foreign archives of the Russian emigration.
