Abstract. This article describes the problem of studying the educational potential of expeditions for art education, in particular, expeditions of Krasnoyarsk artists of the first third of the 20th century are presented in detail in the context of global art expeditionary practice. The main emphasis of the study is on the art of D. I. Karatanova and A. P. Lekarenko, whose professional interests included participation in ethnographic expeditions of the beginning of the 20th century with the aim of collecting field material and exploring the North Siberian indigenous peoples culture. The study provides a brief overview of scientific expeditions around the world involving artists. In addition, a comprehensive review of the expeditionary practices of Siberian artists was conducted on the basis of the studied archival materials of the Krasnoyarsk museums and the analyzed artworks from the funds of the Krasnoyarsk Art Museum named after Surikov. The pieces of art analysis is based on the methodological principles of the modern theory of visual art by V. I. Zhukovsky and N. P. Koptseva. The results of the study allows to conclude about the extraordinary educational potential of research expeditions for art education. The educational vector of pieces of art created by artists during expeditions combines the visual fixation of phenomena studied by scientists and the unique idea of artistic images. In addition, expeditions lead to a new stage in the professional development of artists. The study demonstrated the process of establishing the educational practice of research expeditions involving artists in the first third of the XX century as a focused activity of professional development. A review of expeditions involving artists allows to enter this educational practice in a global context. The above educational practice of Krasnoyarsk artists can be broadcast to other regions and countries to improve the quality of art education.
