EMPLOYMENT TRAJECTORIES OF INDIGENOUS SMALL-NUMBERED PEOPLES OF THE NORTH OF THE KRASNOYARSK TERRITORY

Abstract. In this article we analyze the statements of the northern ethnic groups representatives on the topic of employment of the indigenous peoples of the North. Interviews with the representatives of the Selkup, Ket, Essei Yakut, Evenk, Nenets, and Dolgan people, collected during expeditions to the northern territories of the Krasnoyarsk Territory in the period of five years (2010-2014), were used as the material for the article. The article covers three temporal segments: employment of the older generations prior to the Soviet system; during the USSR times; after 1991 In the course of the work, we identified three main characteristics inherent in the employment trajectories. Firstly, hoarding is uncharacteristic of northern peoples, they take from the nature only the necessary to ensure existence of their own families (an eco-friendly economy) and are always ready to share the last piece with others (a characteristic recorded from the pre-Soviet times). Secondly, the small-numbered indigenous peoples of the North (SIPN) are ready to continue centralized collection of commercial products in the required volume (the legacy of the Soviet period). Thirdly, women are more likely to become individual entrepreneurs, because they need to support children when men lose stable income (modern times). Therefore, it can be assumed that an adequate employment model for the modern SIPN would be a synthesis of these three characteristics; that is the association of several SIPN representatives under the leadership of a businesswoman to work in a traditional sphere in compliance with the principle of eco- friendly economy.
