Ethnic Processes in Greenlanders

Abstract. The article looks at the modern ethnic processes in the indigenous peoples of Greenland (Eskimos, Inuit, and recently more often – Greenlanders). The survey carried out in 2018 asked about 1% of population residing in 5 settlements to take part in a special ethnic poll. Indigenous Greenlanders make up the great majority of the island’s population and their number which showed a steady growth throughout the 20th century has stabilized in the last few years. The foreign settlers that are mostly comprised of the Danes only account for 1/10 of the total population and tend to shrink. Over the second half of the 20th century most Greenlanders abandoned their traditional activities, and now the proportion of the city population is reaching 90%. They, however, managed to preserve an excellent command of their native tongue. Apart from that, the majority have also picked up Danish as a second language, and a significant number of them are fluent in English as well. According to the current statistics, every sixth marriage among Greenlanders is mixed, with over a half of them being biracial. The material and spiritual culture of the people has gone through significant transformations, but they anyway managed to escape the trends of assimilation; Greenlanders have been quite steadily keeping the pivotal elements of their national culture and ethnic identity.
