The Influence of disciplinary offenses of the lower ranks of the Omsk military district on the work of railways during the First World War, 1914-1918.

Abstract. One of the most important reasons of the February revolution was the transport crisis that gripped Russia at that time, caused by the overload of the railways due to the growing needs of the army. The situation was aggravated by the fact that the lower ranks of the marching companies, which were sent to the fronts of the First World War as reinforcements, often left and escaped. They also behaved inappropriately at the stations. The purpose of this article is to analyze the role of misconduct of the lower ranks in disrupting the work of railway transport, to consider the dynamics of its change during the war on the material of the Omsk Military District. The article is written on materials of several archives from Western Siberia, as well as the Russian State Military Historical Archive, and is dedicated to various disciplinary violations of soldiers of depot units of the Omsk military district. In total, 5105 people ran away out of 163 marching companies for which we have such data. In 1917, the transport crisis, along with the democratization of the army, made the position of the Siberian railway catastrophic. To combat the crowd of free-riders at the stations, new measures were introduced that either confused the soldiers or did not have the proper impact. The February revolution, which, among other reasons, happened because of the transport crisis, further aggravated it, which was another reason for the failure of the Provisional Government in their effort to continue the war.
