Modern Ethnic Processes in the Soyot People

Abstract. The article presents the results of the fieldwork studies conducted in 2018 on the Soyot people in the Oka River district of Buryatia to investigate the modern ethnic processes. The number of the Soyot people has been identified to stand at around 2,200 people; the study has also specified the way they are settled across the territory in relation to the Buryat population, with the language processes demonstrated. The Soyot people are mostly bilingual: their native tongue is Buryat but the majority speak Russian as a second language. Promoting Soyot as the language of instruction at schools is now at its initial stage. The Soyot population has largely assimilated into all areas of life (economic activities, as well as the material and spiritual culture). The proportion of mixed marriages with the Buryat population is reaching 50%, with two-thirds of the overall population being ethnically mixed (for the most part Soyot-Buryat). The ethnic particulars of the Soyot people manifest themselves only in certain areas of culture or have been kept in the memories of the senior generation; their main distinction lies in the ethnic identity that made it at all possible to single out this ethnic community from the rest of the Buryat population at the turn of the 21st century.
