Abstract. The article examines the contribution of service people to the scientific study of the vast territory annexed by the Russian Empire in Northeast Asia in the 17th–18th centuries. The purpose of the study is to study the growing role of the Cossacks, the local population in the scientific, local history study of vast northern territories, to identify the range of duties of servicemen in relation to this activity. Numerous information is given about the participation of the Cossacks of local teams in the performance of duties to accompany various kinds of expeditions, attributing the translation, economic activities of the servicemen of the region, gleaned from archival sources. Among the factors that led to an increase in the number of Cossacks employed in scientific expeditions, the author highlights the increase in the level of education of this class, the processes of crossbreeding, which contributed to the Cossacks’ knowledge of languages, traditions and customs of local peoples. Having the skills to survive in the harsh polar conditions, the Cossacks were distinguished by their knowledge of the terrain, the ability to travel long distances off-road, using vehicles and improvised means traditional for the northern peoples.
The author concludes about the dual nature of the Cossack service in the conditions of polar expeditions and surveys of the region with various scientific missions. Accompanying the expeditionary groups, servicemen not only provided practical assistance in the implementation of travel, but also were representatives of the power structures of their regimental associations. The second quality was a factor that ensured order in relations with the local population, who were not familiar with the tasks that the administration of the region assigned to scientists, which contributed to unhindered passage through the territories belonging to local clans and tribes. The article provides information about the participation of the Yakut Cossacks in the expeditions of foreign researchers. The author shows that as the Cossacks acquire competencies in the field of scientific research, they become indispensable assistants to scientists, and then the initiators of organizing independent expeditions to study the region.
