The contemporary state of the decorative and applied arts of the Evenks: indigenous peoples of the Siberian Arctic

Abstract. The decorative and applied arts are traditional for the peoples of Evenkia. The available natural materials (wood, bone, deer fur and suede) predicated the widespread nature of such arts as fur mosaic and bone carving. These material’s availability explains all but the prevalence of beadwork in Evenk culture, which has become the basis for the manufacture of national jewelry and decoration for festive costumes. The article relies on philosophical and fine art review analysis applied to study works of traditional arts and crafts. The research gives rise to the conclusion that the works of traditional art are representative of the Evenks’ ancestral world view, also revealed in the mythological system of shamanism. During the 20th century, the understanding of the Evenks’ art gradually had been focused on placing the realities of Northern life. The pieces of art make it possible to understand the Northern people’s way of life not limited to the aspect of a special economy, but also the aspect of man’s special relationship with the world.
