ALCOHOL AND DEMOGRAPHY OF THE PEOPLES OF THE NORTH

Abstract. The research completed on the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the Middle Siberia revealed close relation of the alcohol policy pursued by the government to the demography of these peoples. The restrictions imposed on the alcohol products delivery to the North regions proved to have improved the demographic rates: increase in the birth rate, decrease in the death rate, and improvement of other demographic parameters. In particular, alcohol influences the early mortality among males. Over 2/3 of males’ deaths are one way or the other related to alcohol. This was especially obvious in the 1980ies when alcohol delivery to the North was temporarily restricted. The alcohol for indigenous small-numbered peoples often appears not as the consequence of some events but the reason for many negative events in life, including the aspects of demography. These facts are a convincing proof of the necessity to implement the policy of sobering.
