Abstract. The transformations of the image of the Chinese national state are considered in the context of the digital imagination, which is being formed in the 21st century. From the point of view of S. Lengen, the decisive and main narrative shaping the modern understanding of the Chinese nation-state is the global success of the Chinese digital economy associated with the activities of the global e-commerce giant Alibaba Group. The Chinese state’s digital policies related to digital platforms have coincided with the aspirations of millions of Chinese people to succeed in Internet entrepreneurship. Alibaba Group makes the “Chinese Dream” credible and reaffirms the image of the Chinese nation-state as one where there is equal access to digital platforms and where all Chinese can be successful in their own digital businesses. Like the moon landing, digital technologies shape narratives of China’s national development, where technological innovation is framed as global competition between nation-states. However, unlike space technologies, digital platforms are an integral part of the lives of a huge number of people. Like Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward, China’s modern Digital Leap Forward claims to be a mass movement—not a single achievement of an exclusive and remote research laboratory, but a collective achievement involving more than 700 million Internet users.
