DIONYSUS IN THE ORPHIC HYMNS

Abstract. The central concept of the study is the aspect of human mentality within the framework of the philosophy of Dionysianism. It is also necessary to consider the relationship between the human and the divine through the mental interaction of the god Dionysus and his admirers, the mystics. This search for the psychic and personal takes place through the analysis of Orphic hymns translated by Catherine Dice. To reveal the main character traits of Dionysus, researchers turn to the plots of myths, literary works, and religious works. The same material is used to develop the rationale for typical Dionysian symbolism, for example, a number of animals – panther, bull, lion, snake, donkey, etc., a list of plants – thyrsus, ivy, grapes, vines. All this fits into the plots and structure of the original works and substantiates the power of Dionysus, his influence and place in the cult actions of people. By synthesizing the general concepts of the selected group (ancient mystics), we can identify their general characteristics: an appeal to the elements (this can be realized through the cult of fertility, expressed through the earth, in Orphic hymns, (as well as through the motif of moisture in “The Bacchae” or “Frogs” , if we take them for a separate analysis); collectivity (mystics are not distinguished as separate individuals. This speaks about the specificity of Dionysianism in general, isolated on the basis of a chaotic community and the merging of many people into a common emotional group). It is also worth highlighting the problem of analysis, which concerns the predominant extrapolation of traits Dionysus to his retinue. There are quite a few specific characteristics of the bacchantes, maenads and other characters around him. The selected issues could be resolved if we expand the list of ancient texts, for example, by turning to the “Acts of Dionysus” by Nonnus or the myths about Dionysus himself.
