Abstract. The capabilities of virtual reality technologies are constantly expanding, including in the field of modern cultural research. The emergence of new methods of using virtual reality technologies in the field of cultural research makes it possible to analyze historical and cultural objects from previously inaccessible sides and the emergence of new knowledge. The purpose of this study is to analyze the possibilities of virtual reality technologies for modern cultural studies. The material for the work was scientific research devoted to the issues of virtual reconstruction, virtual restoration, 3D modeling of art monuments, the introduction of 3D technologies for the preservation of art monuments, 2D and 3D reconstruction of lost cultural heritage objects. The selection of materials for qualitative analysis included publications over the past 15 years. As a result of the analytical analysis, the author notes the development trend of 3D technology, the use of various methods and databases by researchers, and also identifies promising areas for using the capabilities of virtual reality technologies for modern cultural research. Among them, the important issue is the reliability of data obtained using virtual reality technologies, the potential capabilities of these technologies in the future, the disadvantages and advantages of virtual reality technologies over other methods of cultural research.

Keywords: virtual reconstruction, virtual restoration, 3D technologies, 3D modeling, digital cultural studies
