Abstract. This article is devoted to the Soviet poster art of the NEP period. The subject of the study is the image of religion and religious institutions in propaganda materials. The article provides a review of the literature on the research topic. Popular and competing publications at that time were selected as the research material: the newspaper “Atheist” and the magazine “Atheist at the machine”. The research method is qualitative content analysis, which allows you to identify key images and their significant characteristics. For the analysis, posters published in publications for the selected period were selected, 6 posters from each. As a result of the research, the following images were revealed in the posters: images of God in different versions and the supernatural (Jesus Christ, God the Father, the Holy Spirit, the Mother of God, Jehovah, Allah, angels, devils), images of priests (priest, Pope, imam, rabbi), images of the capitalist world (capitalist, monarch, social Democrat, fist, and attributes — gallows, chains, whips), images of a believer (mother, peasants, husband and wife) and images of an atheist (Red Army soldier, worker, revolutionary, atheist, athletes). Content analysis of these posters shows that the semantic group of images of the divine is aimed at seriously discrediting the idea of God in the minds of believers, the church is depicted as an instrument of oppression and manipulation of people, believers are oppressed and depressed, and atheists are healthy and hardworking. It is also worth noting that different publications have different dominant images and their semantic content. It can be concluded that the central subject of the struggle in the materials of the “Atheist” is the institution of the church and the priesthood, their task is to bring the believer out of the manipulations of the church. At the same time, the materials of the “Atheist at the Machine” show religion in general, and the task is to overcome faith as a delusion.
