Abstract. Contemporary digital art exists in many forms, each of which is associated with a certain set of specific features that manifest themselves both at the material and content levels. This article offers an analysis of the features of such a form of digital art as demoscene through the prism of the concept of “retrofuturism”. Considering the features of the perception of retrofuturism in modern culture and philosophy, we can say that this category is closely related to both the tendency to perceive the present as a tension between the past and the future (for example, in the metamodernist concept of culture), and to the ahistorical perception of the development of technical devices, implying variations of a specific material around a virtually unchanging theoretical concept. In demoscene art, these aspects of retrofuturism manifest themselves at the technical and content levels. The technical features of the demoscene include the practice of using outdated technical platforms to demonstrate images associated with modern ideas about computer graphics. The substantive aspect of retrofuturism is expressed in the use of images of popular culture associated with those ideas about the future that were formed in the past. As a result of the analysis, it can be said that for the demoscene, elements of retrofuturism are an essential tension that allows us to consider this type of computer art as an anarchaeological practice that arises from a combination of elements of the past and present. In this sense, the demoscene can be perceived not only as a subject of media archaeological research, but also as an ex- ample of a special method of constant recombination of the past and the present, which in itself can be a tool for experimental research of media platforms.
