Abstract. The article examines the changes in the nature of the viewer’s dialogue with a work of fine art in the space of a virtual art gallery. Information technologies, which influenced all spheres of public life, also affected the sphere of culture. The changes that have taken place are reflected in the emergence of virtual copies of physical cultural institutions. Museums and art galleries began to have virtual analogues, and eventually completely virtual museums and virtual art galleries that do not have physical space.

Thanks to the theory of fine arts by V. I. Zhukovsky, which sets out the conceptual provisions of the modern theory of fine arts, where the work is built as a sign system, it was determined that of the possible (material, index, iconic) statuses of the work, in the virtual space of the art gallery, it is worth giving particular attention to the material status of the work. In the virtual space, the dialogue of the viewer with the work of art changes, due to the lack of physical interaction, the viewer is not affected by the physical material form.

The material status of the artistic image forms the viewer’s idea of the material characteristics of the work and forms an integral artistic image. In the modern virtual space, works of art as a material form are embodied through screen technical means. Through such a material sign, the viewer receives information distorted by the screen, the images become more real than reality itself.
