Abstract. The article reviews and presents the content of Gary Metcalf’s concept related to the history and modernity of industrial revolutions. The modern industrial revolution to create Industry 5.0 is considered. In Japan, this corresponds to the transition to Society 5.0 (or “super-smart society”). Questions are raised related to how to ensure the formation of a fundamentally new socio-technical system of Industry 5.0, which differs from the cyber-physical system of Industry 4.0 in a number of parameters, including human-centricity and the widespread introduction of artificial intelligence technologies. The introduction of artificial intelligence technologies is changing social, political and economic relations quite radically and unexpectedly. Gary Metcalfe’s concept is based on the fact that the most important questions of the transition to Industry 5.0 do not yet have an answer, although the questions themselves have already emerged.
The regulation of artificial intelligence technologies comes up against the fact that until now they have been created and distributed in the commercial interests of corporations, rather than science or communities that are not focused on constant profit-making.
