Abstract. Animation in the modern world is a large and significant phenomenon, revealing itself not only in the field of leisure and entertainment, but also as a sphere of storage and transmission to descendants of national traditions, history, folklore and mythology. This article examines the animated work of 2014 by the Irish director Tom Moore “The Song of the Sea” from the point of view of borrowing and visualizing certain motifs and images of Irish mythology. In order to identify certain signs indicating specific mythological motifs in animation, the main mythological characters from literary sources were identified, their verbal description was analyzed and the key motive of history was identified, also the methodology of philosophical and art criticism analysis by V. I. Zhukovsky, N. P. Koptseva and D. V. Pivovarov was also used, which allowed considering the following signs-pointers on separate statuses of the animated work – material, index and iconic: 2D animation in watercolor style, a specific character of mythology, his appearance and behavior, the surrounding world in which animation events unfold, and the interaction of the main characters with other characters. In the “Song of the Sea”, the characters of myths presented have undergone a different degree of transformation of both their appearance and their history as a whole, while each character in his unique and inimitable image, color palette and attributes directly refers the viewer to the original source. Thus, the following conclusion was made: Tomm Moore, referring to Irish mythology, translates the selected main motifs in a new format, understandable to the modern viewer, both visual and semantic content, thereby consolidating the ancient mythological past of his country in the modern digital heritage of Ireland.
