Abstract. The article treats the phenomenon of « Internet (or network) identity», which is formed by the members of the virtual space (in particular, users of social networks). The formation of a network identity became possible as a result of the synthesis of technical achievements of the information society and ideological innovations introduced and developed by postmodern culture and philosophy. Virtual space is not only a copy or an unchanging reflection of reality. This phenomenon considered as a full-fledged sociocultural environment and qualitatively new specific dimension of reality. The network (or virtual) identity is how a person defines himself in cyberspace. To study network identity, we need to analyze the behavior of a person on the Web (in particular, in social networks). We are considering ways for a person to interact with social media tools (what personal information does the user share and what information does he hide). The network identity is considered not as a copy of the real identity, but as creative processing, independently rethought and specifically presented in the virtual space. We used content-analysis as a research tool and analyzed 50 profiles of users of the «VKontakte» social network. We randomly selected 50 (aged 18-25 years) members of the SibFU’s official community in this network. The analysis revealed the main trends in self-presentation of personal characteristics of users, ways of expressing their preferences, features of providing personal data. As a result, we made a conclusion about the network identity (or virtual personality) as an independently constructed creative product, that encourage other users to take interactive action, deciphering the identity of another user based on viewing the information consumed and produced by him.
