Abstract. In recent decades, the trend of colorization of black and white films is gaining momentum in domestic and foreign cinema. However, the first examples of colorized films date back to the beginning of the birth of cinematography — eminent directors-pioneers of cinematography often used colorization and hand-painted frames. Particularly widespread in those days was fragmentary colorization: with this technique, directors tried to create a certain visual effect, both to hide the editing imperfections of early cinematography, and to achieve the highest point of tension in the film with a specific episode. Colorization has become widespread, due to the development of computer and digital technologies, much later, especially in recent decades. At the same time, an ambiguous reaction is developing in the professional cinematographic and ordinary audience. This article is devoted to the analysis of the assessment of the trend of colorization of black and white films from the perspective of the modern young viewer, as well as the reasons for its formation. In 2021, an Internet survey was conducted on the attitude of young people to the «color» Soviet films and on the factors that influenced their position. The result of the study showed that for the overwhelming majority of respondents, high-quality digital colorization has the right to be called a new type of art, but at the same time there are factors due to which a colorized black-and-white film product is perceived by a young viewer rather controversially. In particular, they include excessive saturation of frames, unrealistic reproduction of the color of human skin, as well as the popularity of black and white Soviet films in their original form among some respondents.
