Abstract. The article examines the iconography of the holy and right-believing Prince Alexander Nevsky as a visual representation of a shift in cultural identity in Russia between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. The central paradox of the study lies in the fact that, within the pre-Petrine tradition, the prince’s sanctity was consistently expressed through monastic renunciation, wonderworking, and posthumous intercession, whereas in the Synodal and imperial periods the same image acquired a different semantic dominant. The prince came to be depicted no longer as a schema-monk, but as a sovereign ruler and protector of the state. Such a shift is too radical to be explained solely by the internal transformation of traditional icon-painting form or by the theological development of the canon. The aim of the study is to identify the mechanisms by which the visual representation of the pre-Petrine model of sanctity was transformed into the imperial one through the explication of the visual signs of two monuments: a seventeenth-century hagiographic icon and a nineteenth-century measured icon. The research material consists of a hagiographic icon of Alexander Nevsky dating from the 1620s-1630s and a measured icon of the first third of the nineteenth century from the collection of the State Historical Museum. The methodological basis of the study is the philosophical and art-historical approach developed by V. I. Zhukovsky and N. P. Koptseva, which presupposes an analysis of the work on the material, indexical, and iconic levels. Additional significance is attached to historical-iconographic and cultural studies, which make it possible to relate changes in the visual image to broader processes of cultural transformation. The analysis has shown that the seventeenth-century hagiographic icon constructs the image of Alexander Nevsky primarily as a schema-monk, wonderworker, and heavenly intercessor of Muscovite Rus’. A different model of sanctity is revealed by the nineteenth-century measured icon. Here the saint is represented as a sovereign protector of the empire, while sanctity itself acquires not a monastic but a state-military interpretation. It is demonstrated that the key mechanism of this transformation was the decree of the Holy Synod of 1724, which prohibited the depiction of the saint in monastic attire and established his grand-princely iconographic type. The transformation of Alexander Nevsky’s iconography should be understood not as a particular stylistic shift, but as a visual expression of a deeper change in the cultural paradigm: from the pre-Petrine understanding of sanctity as monastic feat and wonderworking to the imperial understanding of sanctity as the divine sanction of state service. The results of the study may be used in further research on the transformation of the Russian iconographic canon and the visual mechanisms involved in the formation of cultural memory and historical identity.
