DIGITAL ART OF DOMINIK MAYER

Abstract. This article explores the work of German digital artist and illustrator Dominik Mayer (1991 – present), who works in the dark fantasy genre – a subgenre of traditional fantasy. It is characterized by a gloomy atmosphere, a reimagining of classic fantasy canons, and the dominance of evil forces. The article analyzes the main characteristics of dark fantasy, its history, examples of works that served as precursors, and contemporary examples, drawing on specialized literature and publications. These examples are compared with the work of Dominik Mayer, who stands out among representatives of the subgenre for his vibrant colors, energetic compositions, and emphasis on geometric forms. The author discusses how the illustrator’s profession is reflected in his work, and the differences between commercial and non-commercial images are explored. To explain the distinctive features of the artist’s digital art, the author uses interview materials and quotes from the illustrator himself. This article analyzes the digital artist’s work using V. I. Zhukovsky’s method of philosophical and art historical analysis. It highlights the distinctive features of Dominik Mayer’s work on a material level: vibrant colors, sharp shapes, geometric composition, and framing; on an indexical level: the recurring image of a knight, peacemaking through illustrations; and on an iconic level: a pronounced emotionality with freedom of interpretation, a balance of genre canons and innovation with a rethinking of traditional archetypes. The author concludes that Dominik Mayer’s work represents an original interpretation of the dark fantasy subgenre, combining its traditional elements with modern expressive means. The use of a vibrant color palette, unusual compositions, and a deep interest in creating holistic worlds make his art unique and appealing to viewers and fans of fantasy themes.
